Choose the file you need to hand over

Start with the result, then choose the editor

A file extension describes the package another application expects; it does not guarantee that every feature inside the source can be preserved. Choose Word for a DOCX that another person will edit, Excel for an XLSX table with supported calculations, PowerPoint for a simple PPTX presentation, Notepad for a TXT file or Rich Text for basic emphasis in RTF.

For example, a meeting can produce several different deliverables. Minutes belong in a document with headings, a small materials list belongs in a worksheet, and a three-point update can become slides. Sending each in a suitable format makes the next person's job easier than placing everything in one large block of text.

What happens when you open a file

The selected editor reads a supported file into its own browser editing model. This is why a simple document can be a good fit while a workbook full of macros or a presentation full of animations may not be. Import is not a promise of an identical desktop round trip. Each editor explains which content it reads and what its exporter writes.

Opening a local file does not overwrite the source. Download the result as a separate copy, reopen it in the application that will receive it and compare the parts that matter. For a document that may be page breaks and tables; for a worksheet, formulas and row counts; for slides, order, line breaks and pictures.

Try a small example before using a complex source

The guides below the editors include small practice tasks: a meeting note, a two-line order calculation, a three-slide proposal, a precise find-and-replace edit and an RTF handout. They help you learn the controls and identify the result to inspect before moving on to your own files.

If a source uses a feature the editor cannot preserve, keep the original and use an application that supports that feature. Converting a filename or changing the download format cannot reconstruct missing information.

A browser draft is a convenience, not a backup

Supported document content is processed on this device. The site may keep a draft in this browser's local storage when storage is available. That draft does not synchronize to another device, and clearing site data can remove it. Download a copy before leaving the tab or replacing the current work.

Local file processing is separate from delivery of the website itself. Your browser still requests pages and code, and advertising or hosting services may process their own technical data as described in the Privacy Policy. Use that policy to understand the distinction between file contents, browser drafts and website traffic.

Questions about this workflow

Which editor should I use for a CSV?

Use Excel to work with cells and supported formulas. Use Notepad to inspect commas, quotes and line breaks directly. Excel downloads XLSX; Notepad downloads TXT.

Can every Office feature survive import and export?

No. These editors use focused browser models. Check each editor's limits before using complex layouts, macros, fields, slide masters or embedded media.

Does a local draft appear on my other computer?

No. Drafts are stored in this browser when available. Download the file to keep a copy you can transfer or back up.
