Make a precise text change without adding formatting
Notepad works with characters and line breaks. It is suited to a short note, an excerpt from a log, a Markdown draft or a configuration sample you need to inspect. JSON, CSV and XML open as text; the editor does not validate their structure or run their contents.
Start with one replacement you can inspect
Use the three-line practice note below. Open Find from Edit, search for status=draft and put status=ready in Replace with. Use Next to locate the match, then Replace. Read the complete line before using Replace all on a longer file.
Search is literal and ignores case. A short search term can match more places than you intended, so choose enough surrounding text to identify the desired change. Replacing an entire key/value pair is often easier to review than replacing a word that appears in several contexts.
Choose file conventions deliberately
The View tab offers LF or CRLF line endings and UTF-8, UTF-16 LE or UTF-16 BE encoding. Follow the receiving program's requirements. For a new general-purpose note, UTF-8 is a straightforward default. When preserving an existing technical file, inspect its original convention before changing it.
Word wrap changes how a long line appears in the editor; it is different from deliberately inserting a line break. A wrapped paragraph should not be treated as several logical lines just because it occupies several rows on screen.
A filename is not syntax validation
Save a copy downloads a .txt file. If the imported file was settings.json, its characters can still contain JSON, but the download's extension is .txt. Renaming it afterward does not check whether its syntax is correct. Validate it with the program that will read it before replacing a working configuration.
After reopening the download, inspect the first and last lines, accented characters, quotes, tabs and blank lines. A local draft does not synchronize to another device and can disappear when site data is cleared. Keep a downloaded copy of text you need.
Try the workflow
- Enter the three example lines or open a supported text file.
- Find status=draft and replace one occurrence with status=ready.
- Choose the needed encoding and line endings from View.
- Save a copy, reopen it and confirm the intended line changed while the others did not.

Inspect the downloaded copy
- Only the intended occurrence was replaced.
- The line endings and encoding match the receiving program's requirement.
- Quotes, tabs, accents and blank lines have the intended characters.
- Any structured text is validated in its actual consumer before replacing a working file.
Limits of this editor
- Plain text carries no bold, rich document layout or spreadsheet cell model.
- Find/replace is literal and case-insensitive, not regular-expression search.
- The output filename ends .txt regardless of the imported extension.
- UTF-16 import detection relies on a byte-order mark; this is not a general legacy-encoding detector.
- The editor rejects text inputs above 20 MiB, shown as 20 MB in the interface.
